Saints of the Month

St. Elizabeth of Hungery
St. Elizabeth of Hungary was a daughter of King Andrew of Hungary. She married at the age of 14. She spent her life tending to the sick and hungry, even the lepers. A legend has it that when her husband caught her secretly giving bread to the poor, the bread turned into roses. Her husband died in the military when she was 20 years old. She had 4 children. After her husband's death, she gave up her wealth to care for the poor and nursing the sick. Soon after Elizabeth died, people reported miracles happening at her grave. Many people said they were healed there. Because of this, the Pope ordered an investigation. People who had been healed were interviewed. Their stories, along with accounts from Elizabeth's close friends, were enough proof. Elizabeth was canonized just four years after her death in 1231 at age 24. Because of her charitable work, especially her love of giving bread to the hungry, she is the patron saint of bakers. She is also the patron saint of hospitals and nurses. November 16th is her feast day.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You blessed Your relative St. Elizabeth with a special role in Your plan for salvation. Through her intercession, grant that I may always recognize Your presence in my life. Please hear the special intention I bring to You today.
In Jesus, Amen.
